MILWAUKEE, Wis., May 10 -- The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources issued the following news release:
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is seeking public comment on an application for Wisconsin's Green Tier Program by Milwaukee's Lakefront Brewery, Inc. Green Tier is designed to recognize and reward companies who are committed to superior environmental performance.
Lakefront Brewery is applying for Tier 1 of the program. Green Tier encourages businesses to voluntarily collaborate with the DNR to move beyond regulatory compliance to superior environmental performance. To be accepted, an applicant must have a good environmental record, commit to superior environmental performance, and implement an Environmental Management System.
In operation since the first barrel was rolled out in 1987, Lakefront began as a home brewing experiment by brothers Russ and Jim Klisch. Brewing success led to increased production and in 1998 the brewing operation moved to its current location, a renovated coal fired power plant built in 1908 on the Milwaukee River. Today Lakefront produces approximately 17,500 barrels per year, comprised of 22 innovative brews.
In their commitment to the Wisconsin environment, Lakefront has been a leader in sustainable brewing operations in the state. In 1996 their Lakefront Organic E.
S.
B. became the first certified organic beer to be labeled in the U.
S. Lakefront was also the state's first brewery to receive the Travel Green Wisconsin certification from the Wisconsin Department of Tourism, and each Friday visitors can enjoy an environmental tour by brewery president Russ Klisch. Lakefront will be participating in this year's American Craft Beer Week held May 16 - 22, 2011, which offers craft brewers the opportunity to showcase their beer and innovations in the local community.
As they move forward in Green Tier, Lakefront will create an Environmental Management System (EMS). Their EMS will set benchmarks and subsequently targets in energy conservation, waste reduction, and other actions to assure that they are working continuously toward sustainable brewing.
The DNR will accept public comments on Lakefront's Green Tier application through June 10, 2011.
