NSW: Warning over scam letter to venue operators

NSW Parliament has been told that a scam letter has been sent out threatening computer
fair operators with closure over legal obligations.

The letter purports to be from the NSW Office of Fair Trading and says Fair Trading
officers would be inspecting computer fairs across NSW and such events risked closure
if they do not meet certain legal requirements.

NSW Fair Trading Minister REBA MEAGHER says a copy of the fake letter had been faxed
last month to a school in Taree on the NSW north coast.

She says the letter contains incorrect and misleading information that appears to be
a grubby attempt to stifle business competition by scaring off venue operators.

She says Fair Trading is investigating the matter and the culprits face fines of up
to $22,000 as individuals or $110,000 as corporations.

Anyone who receives suspicious communications alleging to be from the Fair Trading
office should call 13 32 20 to verify its authenticity.
