NSW:Hairdresser was so drunk she ate people's scraps

SYDNEY, Aug 7 AAP - A Sydney hairdresser was so drunk on the night of her death sheate other people's scraps at a fast food restaurant, a coronial inquiry was told today.
Nina di Matteo and her husband Tony were in Hungry Jacks on Sydney's Oxford Streetin the early hours of Saturday May 4, 1996 when they saw Paula Brown.
The di Matteo's were some of the last people to see 30-year-old Miss Brown whose bodywas discovered at Port Botany eight days later on May 12.
The inquiry had earlier been told Miss Brown had been to dinner and was later drinkingat the Burdekin Hotel near the Hungry Jacks restaurant on the night of her murder.
Mrs di Matteo told Glebe Coroners Court that she, her husband and some friends satnear Miss Brown in the restaurant when they arrived at about 3.15am.
"She appeared to be intoxicated but she was extremely hungry," Mrs di Matteo said.
Mrs di Matteo said two men sitting near Miss Brown were joking about the way she waseating and when they left she ate their scraps.
"Once they left unfortunately she just grabbed their scraps and started to eat them," she said.
Another group of three men then started paying attention to Miss Brown with one tryingto look up her skirt by peering under the table, she told the court.
"One in particular paid a lot of attention to her," she said.
"It was quite disturbing. He was leaning over trying to look up her skirt."
Mrs di Matteo said the man then spoke to his friends in Arabic which she could understandbecause she was born in Lebanon.
"He was telling his friends to look at her," she said.
She said she was also shocked at the behaviour of the Hungry Jacks security guard wholater appeared to know the men.
"He was looking at us all and he didn't do anything," she said.
Mrs di Matteo said she was concerned for Miss Brown's safety when she and her husbandleft the restaurant.
"I remember saying to my husband that we should get this girl in a cab," she said.
The inquiry continues.
