FED: National road toll rises to 33 with 2 deaths in NSW
The national holiday road toll stands at 33 after the deaths of a young driver and
an American pedestrian in New South Wales overnight.
Police believe the young male car driver veered onto the wrong side of the road, went
over an embankment and hit a tree on Hawkesbury Road in the Blue Mountains.
Earlier, a 52-year-old American man was killed and another man critically injured in
a hit and run crash in Sydney's west.
Police say the two men were about to get into a car in Plumpton when another car crashed
into them.
Fourteen people have been killed on the roads in New South Wales since the holiday period began.
There have been seven road deaths in Queensland, five in Victoria, three in the Northern
Territory and two each in South Australia and Western Australia.
The ACT and Tasmania remain fatality free.
(Eds: National road toll figures are for the period 0001 (AEDT) December 21 to 2359
(AEDT) January 6. Some states and territories have different periods.)
